Dakota Sportsman, Inc. was founded in a simple meeting at the Circle K Cafe in Bryant, SD. Around 20 concerned sportsmen gathered to discuss what they felt was the shrinking voice of the average sportsman in the South Dakota Legislature. The concerns of the vocal few seemed to loom over most of us who enjoy South Dakota’s outdoors. Decisions were being made in the legislature, and on the policy level of the state wildlife agency, which didn’t reflect what was clearly the consensus of public sportsmen. Section lines were being closed, and they were shutting out public hunting in the prime goose country of the Missouri River. The threat of banning road hunting was made time and again. Public access on lakes was under fire in the State Capitol, in state agencies and in South Dakota’s courts. The founding members of Dakota Sportsman, Inc. put their minds towards turning those trends around. By affiliating with the South Dakota Wildlife Federation, Dakota Sportsman, Inc. is represented in the legislature by the Federation’s lobbyists. We frequently send some of our members to lobby lawmakers on key legislation and to attend meetings of the SD Game, Fish & Parks Commission.
